Help toward Self-Help
Major parts of the community are excluded or in risk of exclusion. But how can the problems of those who have lost heart, lost identity and lost their place in society, be solved?
The pedagogical method of Kofoed’s School is known as “Help toward self-help” and is based on the principle that we can all develop personally and improve the quality of our lives when we are given the opportunity to take responsibility. Through education, training, workshops, counseling, advice, practical and social interaction, each student learns the necessary skills to move on in life.
Kofoed’s School in Copenhagen is an independent, humanitarian organization that provides help toward self-reliance for people with social problems. We have been doing so for more than 80 years – since 1928, when the School was founded by sacristan Hans Christian Kofoed.
The School is built on a popular and Christian foundation, and at its heart lies a deep respect for the individual. Everyone has resources. There is potential for growth even in people who are in difficult situations. Since the late 1990s, Kofoed’s School and its ideas have experienced major expansions abroad. More than 20 schools and projects in the Kofoed tradition have been established in a number of countries across Central and Eastern Europe.
